Crow Hunting

Was my first time out crowhunting. My first crow was just in the backyard at my cabin saw a crow off at a distance hit the call it came flying over. Then one shot it came falling down in the middle of some thick woods. Dog went out on a 40 yard retrieve and brought it back was his first retrieve for hunting.

Then I went out this morning with a buddy to this one field the just got its hay cut and the crows were all around. We got set up by 5:30 and the crows were just bombing in. I ended up shooting 6 this morning and my buddy got 3.
Here is 7 of them 2 of them fell into a bog.

We ended up doing pretty well for this being our first time out crow hunting.

I assume you eat them? What do they taste like? I've had Phesant before and it was alright, but wild turkey was really tasty.

I'm not a hunter so just wondering.

I don't eat them, but know some do. I hunt them more as predator control. They are notorious nest raiders, so I think of it as doing what I can do help out the birds I do eat.

Try an owl decoy in the evening when they're coming in to roost. For some reason crows really don't like owls and you should be able to get a few to come in for a closer look. Get the owl as high in the tree as you can. Also, do your best to stay hidden/covered.

Wondering if just finding some road kill and put a couple decoys next to it would work.

Crows are smart birds and are not easy to trick. There are two ways of hunting them you can either do a hand call or an electronic call (I recommend electronic call) and hope they flyover. I usually prefer this method when there is a clearing in the woods where you shoot them flying by that way you are kind of hidden.

The other way is field hunting them. I usually will bring out a couple of decoys then hide in the layout blind or the side in the corn rows. However they are as smart as geese when it comes to landing and don't like to land near the corn rows as much. This is the most successful way and you can have days shooting over 50 crows doing it this way.

Be sure to use your dead crows as decoys works a lot better then the fake decoys.

If the crows are flaring when they are coming in they see something that they don't like so keep on changing up where you are hidden and such. When you do get everything perfect you are in for a fun day.

*Never do 3 short calls into a hand call in a row. This is a crow distress call and will flare the crows.
