Des Moines River
We hit the river tonight and got zipped......again. I have to say its higher than I've ever seen at our spot!! The dam usually drops about 6 foot but tonight it looked like a big ripple and maybe dropped 2 foot. If I didn't know better I would have thought it was rappids!! High point of the evening was a nut with a jet boat. Going down stream was easy enough but the boat went almost 90 degrees(vertical) when he went up stream and hit the dam. Would have been no worries with a Blazer or a RiverPro but this clown was hitting it with daddies speed boat.
I did see some white bass come in again so there are some fish to be had if you want to stand elbow to elbow and fish the slack water.

Keep at it Pat, one of these times the fish will cooperate. I hate the combat fishing also. I would just a soon go to a different less productive spot than deal with the crowds, like ML this weekend. I will not be going to the north end sand even though it's usually like fishing in a barrel.

I heard Barnacle's dredged way out into the lake in order to reach deeper water. I hope our private harbor dredging was deep enough, there was only 6" of water at the mouth last fall.Olson Insurance Agency

I've seen a handfull of smallmouths come out but no black bass. There's some classic looking bass water above the dam but I've never heard that its worth trying for bass. Around there everything that gets caught usually ends up in a picture at the local baitshop and I've yet to see a largemouth. Closer to the Saylorville spillway they get a few more smallmouths but still not much for largemouths.

Yeah, there are largemouth in there, but not chased as hard as the smallies. You will get more of them in some of the feeder stream pools upstream but some good ones on the main river as well from what I have heard. I know some guys that chase them pretty hard on the river when it calms and gets lower in the summer. Just a great all around river if you can put up with the bucket fishermen.
