Favorite Species
What is your favorite species to target during open-water?

Don't have a true favorite. I like bass, walleye, crappie & big pike. Throw in some nice sized sunnies for good measure too.

Aside from very early season when I target Walleyes, Smallmouth bass is my most targeted fish and followed up closely by Pike and Musky. It really depends on what area of the state I am fishing. Metro area=musky. NorthernMN=smallie.

Although Walleye is my favorite to catch, I find I spend much more time fishing for bass. Mainly because the lake we are on has many more bass and muskies then walleye.

Hello,
It has been said that I like to chase after Pike for the most part. I also like to fish other species but Pike would have to be number one.
Take care,

Walleyes, if I catch anything else then I'm doing something wrong.

Big Lake Salmon, Steelhead, & Trout. Can't forget about all the "eyes" out there as well.

Brown and Green Bass. If you see me fishing for anything else is only because Bass are out of season.

I'm a bass guy - mainly smallies but I love the largies too! I would be into other fish if I actually ate fish, but I'm not into it. Of course I always end up with enough of a mixed bag to get my fill of other game fish when I fish the river!

I gotta say Walleye. To me you can't beat sitting on a rock pile at 3 in the morning bouncing a leech. Then you feel the slight weight along with the "tick tick tap tap." Give it about 5-10 seconds of slack, slowing pull the slack up inch by inch until you feel a ever so small amount of tension, then YAM! FISH ON!!!! Can't beat shining a flashlight down in the water and watchin ol' marble eyes raise up from the deeps! I can't wait to get out there again! If I am not fishing I gotta say my favorite activity/species is bowfishing for Carp. What a rush, and it helps the lakes plus keeps you accurate with the bow. Watch out carp here I come.... Brian-

I'd be the Muskie guy! Everything else is quite a bit easier to catch IMO. I like fishing for Walleyes for the occasional dinner... they just don't provide the exciting hit or the phenominal fight. One could argue that pound for pound a smallie is as fun and I think there a blast as well... but a 20+ lb "ski anyday over a 3 - 4 lb smallie.

I understand that this is not a scientific survey, but considering how big walleye fishing is in Minnesota, the results of this poll are a bit of a surprise. I would bet that the majority of those responding are from the Metro Area.
By the way, I'm primarily a bass guy. I have a daughter with a fish allergy and we can not bring fish home. Catch and Release smallies for me.

I grew up fishing bass north of the metro and maybe that has something to do with it. Bass are a hard fighting fish that a guy can go out to fish and keep busy with. They are usually available in good numbers and put up spectacular fights making them my all around favorite. Now if a walleye could tug like a Steelhead...
"That's what I'm talking about."
