Hey Patrick, I am currently going to school.... but I'm not going into the DNR. My original plan was to go to school to become a Fisheries Specialist, but I had a change of heart and went into something else. I have spent some time with the DNR doing lake survey's and electro-fishing.
MagicStik, this is what I caught all my fish on:

Just a plain 1/8oz jig with a 3" PowerGrub

Medicineman, that almost looks like a walleye bait. I am looking at getting a degree in Fisheries, but may change my mind after taking all the Chemistry classes. I could probably do just as well working in a lab, but it would not be as much fun. I am taking Biology right now, Chem 2 or Calculus are next. Good luck with school.
Thanks for the welcome Lance.

Went out for a couple hours saturday afternoon. Ended up with 5 Bass and 3 Walleye's. That wind made boat control a living nightmare!

What are the water temps at? A few of the lakes have turned over up here also. Some lakes are green and tough to fish while others are clear and putting out some decent fish.

lakes haven't turned over in the cities yet and they don't normally until the surface temps reach bellow the temps of 65. drop a camera down with a temp gauge and you will still see cooler water on the bottom, indicating that it hasn't happened yet.

The water temps up here range from 65-68 degrees and some lakes have turned, some have not, and some turned a while back and are already clear . I think there are many other factors to consider other than just the water temps. Depth of the lake and wind are big factors also.

I don't claim to be an expert on this subject at all, but I think there are some valid points to each argument.
I'm just curious how you guys determine if the lake has turned over or not?
unregistered has a point regarding temps ->
by definition a lake can't turn over until the surface temps reach a point where they are lower than the temps near the bottom of the lake. I'm sure each lake is different in this regard as Brian noted. Shallow lakes I'm sure never really turn over because they don't have the delta in temps from surface to the bottom. Once the surface temps reach lower than the temps near the bottom the warmer water from the bottom will rise and exchange with the cooler surface water (cool air temps cause a more rapid cooling at the surface than deep, just the opposite of summer where the surface is heated more than at depth)..
checking the temp at the surface and near the bottom would tell you if the lake has infact turned or not.

I'm not arguing with those facts either. Checking the water temps is a great way to tell if the lake has turned or not......if in fact that particular lake actually turns over.
I am far from an expert on this issue also. When I start seeing a lot of debris such as leaves and weeds floating in the water I assume the lake is turning or has turned. I'm not talking about the new leaves either but rather then decaying ones from previous years. The particular lake that I believe has turned over already was green all year long up until about 2 weeks ago. I didn't fish this lake during this time but when I was there this last weekend it was as clear as its ever been leading me to believe that it had turned over and already settled. This lake did the same thing last year.

I would like to point out to Unregistered that YES infact that some lakes in the cities have turned over. Every lake is different and not every lake follows the same guide lines for turning over. I know for a FACT that Medicine has turned over for a few reasons. 1. The tell tale sign of nasty scum on the surface. 2. I did drop a temp gauge and take several reading. And finally number 3. I go off of historical data from the lake. Here's a site where you can find water quality data on several lakes:
http://lakeaccess.org/index.html
This is an amazing site with TONS of into regarding dam near anything you want to know about a lake."We've been going about this all wrong. This Mr. Stay Puft's okay! He's a sailor, he's in New York; we get this guy laid, we won't have any trouble!"

Meet up with Dan yesterday morning to do a little fishing. The morning started off with some vehicle problems....(I'll let Dan explain) We finally ended up on the water at 7:30 and fished untill 12. Fishing was slow to say the least. It doesn't help that we kept missing strikes, we both ended up catching a couple nice Bass. I ended up with the biggest Bass of the Day, a 21" piggie.
Dan's got the pics of that bad boy. Here are pics of Dan's Bass.
20"

the size of the fish made up for it
I think we ended up with 4 bass and 1 walleye in the boat. 2 of the bass were 20" or better though and the other 2 weren't bad either (18" size).
Here is the 21" pig... If I'd have known the top entry in the bass contest was 21.25", I'd have measured more closely. It was a true hog.

Another decent fish by MedMan around 18"....
