    Down rigging and Superior

Spent yesturday (Friday) in a 21 foot Lund Tyee downrigging just outside of Superior Wisc going for Trout mostly.

Weather was great in the morning and got hotter as the day went on and the clouds disapeared, thank goodness for Bimini tops..

I haven't done this before and by about 5:00 or so we decided to quit, we did catch 4 nice trout and a Coho that I'm thinking ran over 6# ...great day

We did stay where he thought we'd catch smaller trout, they seem to grill/taste better than the big ones.

I will be doing this again...any downriggers for sale ??

Looks like some nice fish. I have always wanted to try it out there but never fished on the big lake.

Nice Al. Grill them on a cedar plank then or you smoke them? I have only done a salt water, brown sugar brine and smoked trout or salmon so interested in any recipes that you may have tried.

Pretty basic this time, original plan was to filet them the lay on tin foil that's been hit with Pam and broil them till you see a bit of brown around the edges, coat with melted butter and flip over, repeat the brown thing and butter.

Wife had other idea's about fish cooked in the house, my fault, the vent system is waiting for the cabinets to get installed.

Ended up using the infra red burner on the grill and a bit of added heat from the other burners, did the butter thing when I thought the one side was done then fliped and repeated.
Added a little salt and pepper and I think they came out pretty good, small trout so they didn't have that fatty/oily taste the bigger ones can have...so they tell me.

I'll have to try a different method next time.

Very nice outting! I have been watching watching riggers on Ebay ever since we got our boat, but my wife keeps spending our money on crap we don't need.
I was wondering why the frisbee kept getting bigger. Then all of a sudden it hit me

Thinking of making a few more trips this year, but I can see me liking this style of fishing.
But there's enough of a investment I'd like to make sure before I buy anything major.

Check the cannon outlet site, I see they had some pretty good deals on what I assume are returns or ? units.

I was out there a couple of weeks ago myself. I launched out of Superior as well. I love doing the down rigging thing, not very good at it, but we managed to boat two lakers and 1 steelhead. I only have a 19ft boat so finding the perfect weather does limit my fishing out there somewhat. I prefer eating the lakers over salmon. I cut the heads off and gut them and leave the skin on. Fill their bellies with onions, green peppers, butter ans lemon pepper. Wrap them in foil and grill them for about 10 minutes flipping the once. Unwrap the foil and the bones and skin fall right off.

As far as down riggers go I have the cannon hand cranks. The work good, but can a lot of work if your fishing 200+ft of water. My brother in law has the electric riggers and they are great, but 1200 skins a piece.

April and may seem to be the best fishing up there. You dont even need riggers they are so shallow.

You can get some nice new cannons for under $500, got one from here...

Went out last weekend and did pretty well considering weather was a bit sporadic, 7 lakers, 2 coho's and a steelhead which we returned as it didn't have the clipped fin and I guess they don't taste very good anyway.

Seasons almost over but if somebody wants to go out next year, keep me in mind.

This year has been a fishing disaster for me, but finally got the boat fixed and set up for the great lakes now.
