My eye OPENER weekend!!!
Yesterday I made the trip down to the Hay Creak, which is just outside of Red Wing and West into the bluffs. I was there with two other of my buddies from school that frequent the SE MN streams about once a month if not more.
Fishing was decent, saw LOTS of trout in groups of 20 or more, they just did not want anything to do with our presentations. To be in the middle of the bluffs to see and hear nothing but some rapids in the distance, birds stirring about, there is nothing better. I was hoping for some turkeys or some deer but they were camera shy this day.
We did manage to catch 4 Brown Trout ranging from 6" - 12". All were released to be caught on another trip (which will happen real soon). We scouted a few areas of spider webs before we started, and found that there was a Blue Winged Olive (see below picuture) hatch that has been going on for a few weeks. My two buddies had the weighters and the fly rods; I kept to dry land and worked the deeper pools with my ultra light (Wally Marshall Crappie Rod) rod and mepps spinners.
While I manned the many deeper pools that we saw fish holding, the two true fly fishermen went a little further downstream to a little falls where the fish were holding in a little cove watching the Blue Winged Olive coming over. They did manage to take three trout out of their holdings pattern but then they shut off.
After an hour or so the fish really took off and were rising everywhere in the pool where I was previous. I got some great video and picutures of this as there were fish jumping every 10 seconds or so. I did manage to put the camera down and catch my first trout from SE MN. It fell victim to a small yellow bodied Mepps spinner that had a black fly trailer on it.
Over all it was a great day and the fishing was good to boot. If anyone is ever feeling a little down and need's a pick-me-up take a 60 minute drive down to Red Wing and just walk in the bluffs, or yea there is some of the best trout fishing also that you will find around. There is a reason why they call that part of the country GOD’S COUNTY!!!
