Weather warms, fishing explodes

by Nick Wognum

It's a whole new ball game now. Fishing in the Ely area turned with the weather and the results are in this week's North Country Angler.

Leading the way is a 9 lb. 12 oz. walleye from (where else), Burntside Lake where the walleyes grow fast and fat. Sean Cahill of Ely checked in that Burntside beauty over at the Great Outdoors.

Reeling in an 8 lb. walleye out of White Iron Lake was Hannah Lamsat of Tower who checked in the fish right at Silver Rapids Lodge.

In the northern pike category, some monster fish came in, with six over 12 pounds. Top pike weighed in a 17 lb. 1 oz. and was caught in Farm Lake by Loraine Devyak, Hobart, IN and registered at Babe's Bait & Tackle. Same story for a 16 lb. 12 oz. northern caught by Robert Devyak, Hobart, IN.

Bruce Sivertson of Grand Portage, WI brought in a pair of nice pike as well. He entered a 15 lb. 12 oz. northern and a 13 lb. 3 oz. fish at Silver Rapids Lodge.

Fishing in Fall Lake and catching a 14 lb. 2 oz. northern was John Loidolt, Pierz, MN who entered the contest at Great Outdoors.

Another big White Iron pike, this one 13 lb. was registered by Dave Pariseau, St. Paul, MN through Silver Rapids Lodge.

Taking advantage of the early bass season in this part of Minnesota, Skip Coyne of West Chicago, IL registered a 4 lb. 8 oz. Low Lake bass over at Skube's Bait and Tackle.

Burntside can give up some nice lakers as well. Celia Domich of St. Paul, MN entered an 8 lb. 13 oz. trout at Great Outdoors.

In the Catch & Release division, a 29-inch walleye was put back in Basswood by Joe Glass, S. St Paul, MN who filled out his paperwork at Packsack Canoe Trips.

A 26-inch walleye release was reported in Basswood Lake by Ed Romic Jr., Tucson, AZ through Skube's Bait & Tackle.

Joining the 20-inch club with a 20-inch smallmouth was Ed Romic Sr., Tucson, AZ by entering the contest at Skube's Bait & Tackle.

In the pike section, a 41-incher was released in Farm Lake by Mike Chenier, Knoxville, MO with the entry coming in from Moose Track Adventures.

And a 39-inch northern pike was put back in Lake Vermilion by Jay Rozinka, Cottage Grove, MN who stopped in at Great Outdoors.

The weather is better, the fishing is hot and the bugs are just coming out. Better get out and try your luck!
