Our third Duluth Bass League event was held on Island Lake Reservior. Congrats to Mister Twister on a fine day on the water with a winning total of 81.75" worth of Smallmouth! Every team brought in a limit except one boat. Muskyhead's team came in second with 80.5". Doug and Ouitdee from the DABL league fished with us and they did well with a third place finish and a total of 77". Bassin and Tubes brought in 75" which was just enough to place ahead of Stratocaster's 74.75". Rosco and I finished 6th with 66" and Warner Construction came in 7th with 62" and the 18.75" Smallmouth that won the Big Fish.

Tubes, Spinnerbaits, Magic Stixs, and Skitter Pops were some of the baits that produced. It was the most frustrating day on the water I have ever had! We lost over 10 quality (15"+) smallies at or near the boat. I have never in my life lost so many fish. Rosco and I had 4 fish and were working for number 5. We came to a reed point and I got a solid hit on my whacky rigged Magic Stik. Near the boat the fish turned and my bait just came loose. That was the bigginning of a very long hour and a half with many new swear words made up. :D I though the first two fish were bad to lose but it almost became funny after numbers 3 through 10 or more. With 20 minutes left we fianlly managed to get a 13.75" fish into the boat for number 5. Rosco had a couple of very nice fish on earlier in the day but they got hung up in the weeds.

It was a fun event with a lot of fish caught. Twister and I had fished it a couple nights before and had no luck at all. I am glad it went much better than we thought it was going to. Amazing what a switch in wind direction can do!

This is the one event I really look/looked forward too, but taking a first last year and 4th this time around was a shot in the arm, but it was a great outing. The last hour to hour and a half, Tubes and I could not buy a bite, but that's fishing. This event is interesting because of the amount of water there is to cover, the key is that it does not all hold fish. Congrats to Twister and his partner on a well deserved win!
I think the slow approach was the key on this lake, we managed fish right off, I was throwing a pop-r and having luck, but as the day got to the 10:00 hour that bite was over, we managed a few more measurable fish on plastics and spinnerbaits on the outside edges of weeds with a little wind. Throughout the day the fish we caught were from 2" - 8' of water, the later it got the deeper the fish were.
This lake is suppose to have a good quality smallie population but it fishes different than most, it is full of gravel and has some rock areas but the shorelines drop quickly and I believe these fish use what ever is shallow for cover as they roam, we fished areas that look more typical for largemouth than the smallies and that is where you will find them. This lake has no largemouth population that I am aware of, but would be a well rounded lake if it did, at least if the smallie fishing got tough you could target largemouth to get your numbers up or at least get your limit early on....just my 2 cents.

The highlight in out boat was the chatterbait - two casts resulted in two 15" smallies. I propley went and bought a few more....like 5.

I do agree this Bass league is great fun...thanks Bassin' and Magic for the coordination and upkeep.

As much as it pains me to admit, I had a great time up there! Watching Magic's meltdown after losing his 4th fish in a row reminded me of what my golf game use to be like:D !!
